National Rescue Museum Dorus Rijkers

'The National Rescue Museum Dorus Rijkers is the museum dedicated to the Dutch maritime rescue services. Located in Den Helder, the museum offers an immersive experience into everything related to water and survival. Our goal is to bring the entire story of maritime rescue in the Netherlands to a broad audience and to continue telling the tales of the past and present.'

The heart of Maritime Rescue

Founded on July 10, 1981, the National Rescue Museum has evolved from a gathering place of passionate volunteers to a high-quality interactive museum, highly rated by visitors. Originally situated in Den Helder's city center, the museum relocated to a former engine workshop on Willemsoord in 2002. In 2015, a part of the museum was ceded to the new Theater de Kampanje, prompting a significant renovation that revitalized the museum.

Organization

The National Rescue Museum is managed by a director, three permanent staff members, and approximately 65 volunteers. The volunteer group is diverse in composition, their contribution indispensable to the museum's operations. Notably, the director also serves as a volunteer, underscoring the unique organizational structure befitting of a distinctive museum. Permanent staff are engaged in Collection Management, Education, Finance, Administration, Marketing, Communication, and Commercial Activities.

Mission

The mission of the National Rescue Museum Dorus Rijkers is to make the heritage of Dutch maritime rescue accessible to a wide audience. We aim to ignite interest among current and future generations through various storytelling mediums—words, images, and sound—highlighting our passion for maritime rescue.
