Museum Education for Schools

The National Rescue Museumis focused on both education and fun. Children and high school students learn interactively about rescue work and safety at sea. This topic intersects with many themes, from communication to technology, hobbies, and clothing. As a teacher, you can explore all these angles. A visit to our lifeboat museum is a fantastic experience. Highlights include the wind tunnel, with wind force 10, and the VR experience. We also bring the museum to your classroom, taking our treasures with us or providing teachers with lesson plans.

School Trip

Come on an adventure with your class at the National Rescue Museum. Why choose a class trip to this museum in North Holland? It’s fun, adventurous, and the children can – almost – do everything. Ring ship bells, tie knots, and conduct online rescue missions. We also offer scavenger hunts and audio tours. The class will be entertained for hours while learning about the unique rescue work of the KNRM and the Lifeguard Brigade.

Primary Education

Storms, rough waves, or ships in distress. Rescue work sparks the imagination, especially in our water-rich region. Many coastal towns have their own KNRM station or lifeguard brigade. What do these men and women do at sea? Is it exciting, and what skills are required? In our educational programs, children learn in a playful manner. Our offerings fit into various subjects, such as math and geography.

Presentation & Report

Give a presentation about sea rescuers and impress your class! It’s such an exciting topic. When you talk about it, everyone will be on the edge of their seats. We are happy to help you prepare. Request a free presentation kit, which includes all the information you need for an engaging presentation. Let us know how your class liked it!

Museum in the Classroom

The National Rescue Museum also comes to the classroom. Our museum teacher tailors the story to the school’s needs, aligning with the regular curriculum or a current theme. Rescue work is so comprehensive that our museum teacher can creatively engage students with it. The foundation consists of adventurous anecdotes and beautiful highlights from the collection. Children can view these up close – and sometimes even touch them with special gloves.

Heroes of Den Helder

The rescue field has many heroes, including in our port city of Den Helder. Who are these people and what drives them? Children discover this in our traveling exhibition, Helderse Helden. With videos and games, it’s fun and interactive educational material. Primary schools can book the exhibition, which comes with a corresponding lesson plan (for grades 3 to 5).

Secondary Education

For secondary school students, we seek more depth. Alongside excitement and adventure, they learn about the historical heritage of Den Helder. Our museum teacher collaborates with teachers to tailor the content. She can provide suitable material for every school level, from examining collection pieces during art class to learning about navigation techniques in physics.
