Museum Education for Secondary Education

The National Rescue Museum develops various educational projects. We aim to excite secondary school students about the world of rescuers, allowing them to discover more about local history and the historical heritage of Den Helder in a fun and educational manner.

Culture Tour

Every year, third-year students from Scholen aan Zee visit various cultural institutions in Den Helder as part of a cultural tour. This is a straightforward way for them to explore art, culture, and heritage in their city. They visit De Kampanje (theater), Triade (art education center), the library, the Maritime Museum, the National Rescue Museum, and Zevenskoop (cinema).

Each cultural institution offers an engaging program of approximately 45 minutes.

Museum in the Classroom

Bring the National Rescue Museum into the classroom! Our museum educator visits and tells the class all about lifeboat services, the collection, and stories from the past. They even bring along some prized artifacts for close inspection by the children, who can touch certain objects with special gloves. How cool is that! Our museum educator tailors the story to fit the school's curriculum. A unique experience for children and their teacher.

Cost: € 54.50 per hour

Project Helderse Heroes

In 2018, we launched Project Helderse Heroes, where second-year havo and vwo students from Scholen aan Zee research former rescuers from Den Helder and its surroundings. The top researchers get the opportunity to interview an old rescuer and document their stories.

The final result is a film based on these stories. We aim to preserve this heritage and secure it for the next generation. The films are part of a traveling exhibition suitable for upper primary school grades. A valuable and enjoyable project that will continue with rescuers from the region.
